'The Kiss' is one of Klimt's most famous paintings and it makes an ideal love card to send for many occasions, especially Valentine's Day. Klimt was the outstanding Austrian painter of his time - one of the greatest figures of a golden age of Viennese culture that ended with the First World War. He came from a family of craftsmen and took a delight in beautiful and expensive materials, often using gold leaf in his paintings. The lush patterning so characteristic of his work helps create the sensuous mood of pictures such as this. A female friend said that he depicted women 'like costly orchids lost in dreams of ecstatic rapture'.
